Serves 4

No matter where you are in the world, the taste of a hamburger will always bring a spark of joy to your lunchtime. I’m not talking about something you’ve picked up in a rush at the supermarket (they’re not that great for your health). I’m talking about a delicious home made beef patty, fresh burger buns, and fresh toppings.

4 burger buns

500g lean beef mince

1/2 brown onion (grated)

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1 egg

1 tablespoon tomato sauce (plus extra to serve)

1 garlic clove (minced)

1 red onion

2 tomatoes

2 cups mixed salad leaves

4 slices cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons aloi

Step 1: Prepare your burger patties. In a large mixing bowl, use your hands to combine beef mince, grated onion, minced garlic, tomato sauce, breadcrumbs, and egg. Season with salt and pepper. Use your hands to separate the mixture into four beef patties. Place the patties on a plate and transfer to the fridge for about 10 minutes to set slightly.

Step 2: Prepare your buns and toppings. Thinly slice the red onion into rings. Slice the tomato. Wash the salad leaves. Place each into its’ own bowl.

Step 3: Heat your BBQ to medium-high heat. Halve the burger buns and toast until golden on the inside of each half. Next add your mince patties to the BBQ plate. Cook for about 5 minutes each side. About halfway through cooking the second side, top with one slice of cheese each and close the BBQ lid so that the cheese melts.

Step 4: To serve, either assemble your burgers or arrange toppings, patties, buns, and condiments (sauce and aloi) on a platter.
